Marine Science PhD Studentships
2008 - 2011 Plymouth, Devon
Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) is a multidisciplinary, internationally
renowned, strategic
marine research centre. We are offering up to three PhD studentships to
enthusiastic and
highly motivated graduates, who meet the eligibility criteria specified by
the Natural
Environment Research Council (NERC) (see
http://www.nerc.ac.uk/site/guides/students.asp).
PML has identified several PhD project areas
that relate to our principal research areas of:
Marine Biodiversity and Sustainable Ecosystems;
Biogeochemistry and Marine Systems; and Environment
and Human Health. Our expertise in inter alia remote
sensing; molecular biology; informatics; and modelling
is used to address key environmental issues, such
as Global Change and Sustainable Development.
We also co-ordinate two long-term monitoring
projects: the Western Channel Observatory
(www.westernchannelobservatory.org.uk)
and the Atlantic Meridional Transect programme
(www.amt-uk.org). Further details of all of PML's
research and the PhD projects can be found on
our web site (www.pml.ac.uk).
PML has strong affiliations to, and excellent
collaborations with many UK universities.
Successful candidates for PML's PhD studentships
will be registered with an appropriate university
and co-supervisor best suited to the area of research.
Eligibility:
You must have, or expect to obtain, a good honours
degree in relevant subjects and preferably some
form of post-graduate training or relevant experience.
Please pay particular attention to the NERC eligibility
criteria, and note that any student who does not
qualify for full NERC funding will need to prove that
they can secure the additional funding to support
their application.
At PML you will benefit from access to the latest
computer, networking and communications technology,
modern laboratory instrumentation, the National
Marine Biological Library (NMBL) and two modern
inshore research vessels. In addition, PML runs a
lively Sports & Social Club, providing a variety of free
and subsidised facilities and activities. For further
information on PML refer to www.pml.ac.uk.
The PML is a charitable research organisation and
as such operates an equal opportunities policy and
welcomes applicants from all sections of the
community. People with disabilities and those from
ethnic minorities are currently under-represented
and their applications are particularly welcome.
We operate a Guaranteed Interview
Scheme for disabled candidates
who hold the minimum qualifications
for the post.
